Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person's mind, mood, cognitive function or health.
Some essential oils such as tea tree have demonstrated anti-microbial effects. Evidence exists that essential oils may have therapeutic potential. Aromatherapy may have origins in antiquity with the use of infused aromatic oils, made by macerating dried plant material in fatty oil, heating and then filtering.
The concept of aromatherapy was first mooted by a small number of European scientists and doctors, in about 1907. In 1910, Maurice Gattefossé, a chemist burned a hand very badly in a laboratory explosion. The hand developed gas gangrene, which he successfully, and intentionally, treated with lavender oil.
Another successor are the French surgeon, Jean Valnet, pioneered the medicinal uses of essential oils, which he used as antiseptics in the treatment of wounded soldiers during World War II.
Lavenda: The essential oil been used in the whole of aromatherapy. Has a reputation for slowing down wrinkles, brings deep relaxation, calming, soothing to the intestines and improves digestion.
Balances mood swing and uplift moods. Mostly used for relaxing muscles and lessens aches and pains. Vapours can open the sinus and breathing passages and hence soothes chesty spasmodic coughs.
Basil, French Oil: It is known mainly for its effect on the nervous system. Is a good stimulant and tonic and is helpful in coping with unwanted emotions, such as fear, jealousy and negative thoughts.
It can treat a variety of respiratory ailments: restoring a lost sense of smell, avert attacks of asthma and relieve sinus congestion.
It has stomach-soothing properties and relieves stomach cramps and vomiting. Dispels gas and prevents constipations. Stimulate appetite and aids digestion.
It clears the head (headaches and head colds), gives the mind strength (sharpens the senses) and clarity (clarifies thoughts) and relieves intellectual fatigue (increases concentration).
It can revive someone who has fainted.
Jasmine: Some people call it as romantic oil because of it's anti depressant and ahrodisiac property. This oil brings you in mood for love and also enhances your libido. Jasmine been use in during the first night in some Indian Subcontinent. It also helps cure problems such as premature ejaculation, frigidity, impotency etc.
Relief to those women who suffer from irregular, obstructed and painful menses or an untimely menopause. Increases milk secretions from breasts and is thus very good for lactating mothers and the feeding babies.
Also good for uterine health as it tones it up and promotes flow of certain hormones which ensure good health and proper functioning of uterus. It also helps protect it from tumors, particularly after menopause, by restricting flow of estrogen.
Calms down body, mind and soul and brings forth your positive and constructive emotions. It gives relief from anxiety, stress, annoyance, anger and depression as well as from inflammations.
Other Benefits: It is good for skin and keeps it smooth and free from cracks. It can be used to free people from narcotic and other addictions. It also cures muscle pain.
BUT, make it sure to avoid using this oil if you're pregnant since it is an Emenagogue. It is highly relaxing and sedating and thus heavy doses should be avoided.
Lime: May helps fight and protect against viral infections which may cause common cold, mumps, measles, pox and other such diseases.
Serves as an appetizer or aperitif. It activates secretion of digestive juices into the stomach even before you start eating and increases your hunger.
Aromatherapy works in two distinct ways either through the sense of smell or through the skin. Essential oils are highly concentrated and a little goes a long way. Essential oils should be stored in a cool, dark place, in dark amber or cobalt blue bottles.
Essential oils shall be applied trought bath, diffuser, massage, as a perfume, or body/room spray.
